In 2018 a team of 12 climbers were the first to summit Agrihan. At 3204 feet it is the highest point of the Northern Mariana Isands and all of Micronesia. As co-leader of that team, I am organizing an “at cost” return trip in the June time frame so others can experience the adventure.
The trip will be ~2 weeks with one week climbing Agrihan. Tentative dates are June 8-22 (US to US) but they are still flexible if people have date conflicts. Most of the time hired locals will hack a trail through dense sword grass. Two camps will be established along this strenuous hike. When not hauling gear/supplies, most time will be spent at a beach camp near a small Chamorro settlement. The final crater rim traverse will be secured with ropes and a via ferrata (caving ladder). Basic climbing harness skills will be needed (although they can be taught). A more detailed itinerary is available.
I have a special attachment to Agrihan (third time was the charm), but you can hear from other 2018 team members. KSPN2 TV interviewed us before climbing Agrihan and after successfully returning and Peter wrote a nice article on “The Obsessive Quest of High Pointers” for Outside Magazine. Other media links (radio, print) can be found on the “Links” page.
Besides highpointing Agrihan you can:

Agrihan is quite remote with several logistical problems such as obtaining permission from the mayor’s office or chartering a boat for the 20-24 hour ocean crossing. Having been involved in the previous expeditions, I am well acquainted with handling these logistics.
I am looking for climbing partners interested in sharing team expenses. This is not a for-profit commercial trip. It’s an “at cost” trip of like-minded people who are looking for an adventure to this special place. If interested, please contact me: clintkaul@gmail.com or check out the FAQ.
