Frequently Asked Questions

What is the itinerary?
See the “More Info” -> Itinerary page for details.

What are the costs?
See the “More Info” -> Costs page for details

Are there other things to do?
Yes. See the “More Info” -> “Add-on Ideas” page for suggestions.

Do I need any special skills to climb Agrihan?
Yes – although they can be taught/practiced at the beach. Climbing harness use and travel along a fixed line will be needed. A few team members will secure the crater rim traverse and can belay you if you want.

Do I need any special gear?
Yes. See the “More Info” -> “Gear List” page for a list of recommended gear.

I’m afraid of heights. Should I come?
No. The approach to the crater rim along Stegosaurus Ridge has several fins with narrow paths and steep drop-offs. More critically, the final pitch to the summit has sheer drop-offs. A panic attack and subsequent rescue would be very difficult. Check out the photos/description for summit day of the 2018 first ascent to see what you’ll encounter. Know your limits.

I get nervous on narrow (1-2 feet) ridges. Should I come?
Probably not.

Do I need a passport?
Yes. Even though CNMI is a US territory, most flights pass through a foreign country (Japan, South Korea, …) which require your passport. Even those flying Hawaii -> Guam -> Saipan need their passport to pass through Guam since it’s a territory and not a state.

I’m a non-US citizen. Can I join the team?
Yes. We’ve had climbers from Canada, Australia and Britain on past expeditions. In general if you can get a US tourist visa you can join the team, but please verify with Clint.

Do I need any shots/immunizations?
If you’ve traveled aboard before you likely have all the shots needed. Check with the CDC and your doctor to verify this. The CDC (as of Feb 22, 2019) recommends “routine vaccines”, hepatitis A, typhoid and possibly hepatitis B vaccinations.
There are a few mosquitoes on Agrihan, and while I don’t worry about malaria, it’s up to you.

Why am I (Clint) returning?
My uncle got me involved in US territory highpointing and I’ve loved the adventures and the excuse to travel somewhere “exotic”. I want to see him join the exclusive 50+6 club this year.
